Travelling Around The Island

Our hints and tips on the best way to travel around Ibiza, to make getting from A to B that little bit more exciting. Information includes bus routes, taxis, water taxis, discobus and even the local land trains.

In recent years, Ibiza has invested heavily in bringing its local transport network up to date. They completed their rejuvenation in the summer of 2008 and now offer a comprehensive system, for economically exploring  the island.

Public Buses

Ibiza now provides a very reliable and frequent bus service, offering connections between all major towns and resorts. In summer, the buses start as early as 6am and continue up until midnight. The 'Discobus' then takes over, shuttling party goers around during the night. The buses are of a high standard and are excellent value for money. In the smaller resorts, buses may only run once or twice a day, so it is important to take note of the times. In the larger resorts of San Antonio and Playa D’en Bossa, you will find regular services across the island; as frequently as a few per hour.

For up to date information, we recommend asking your hotel reception upon arrival. Most hotels will provide detailed summer timetables for your perusal. Timetables are also situated at the bus stops. For more information, please refer to the Ibiza public bus company website.

Discobus

The Ibiza Discobus is a service primarily aimed at clubbers. The Discobus route connects all the major clubs and can save you many euros in taxi fares. Travelling between Ibiza Town, Playa D'en Bossa and San Antonio; the Ibiza Discobus can often become its very own pre-party! You can easily get between Amnesia, Privilege, Space, Pacha, Sankeys, Eden and Es Paradis. It runs from around midnight until 7am. It is slightly more expensive than the day bus, but still in the region of a few Euros. The Discobus is usually jam-packed full, so you may find yourself standing. You can check the disco bus timetable online.

Taxis

Standard taxis in Ibiza can legally carry up to four passengers, so for smaller groups this can be a good way to get around. They operate on a meter system and taxis can be flagged down, if they are displaying a green light on the top. There is a small starting charge for Ibiza taxis which increases at night. In summer, it can be very difficult to get a taxi; especially if you are waiting at the airport but in all major resorts you will find a taxi rank. Ibizahire.com also offers a range of private transfers and have a selection of larger cars available.

Car Hire

There is no better way to explore the open road in Ibiza, than by car! Ibiza offers you a wide selection of vehicles and car hire companies to choose from; providing you with the freedom to find out what the island has to offer.  You can select to either pre-book your hire car, or most accommodation will be able to point you in the right direction. Consult this checklist before you make your car hire choice:

  1. Insurance (it is worth paying a few extra euros for a collision damage waiver- just in case).
  2. Do they have a 24 hour breakdown or advice line?
  3. Is a map provided?

Many people worry about driving on the right hand side of the road, but you should find their system easy to navigate. Ibiza boasts some of the best main roads in Spain, having recently undergone a modernisation program. Just remember that driving in Ibiza is similar to the UK, so never drink and drive!
